NRA Law Enforcement Tactical Shooting Instructor

February 23-27, 2015

Richmond Rod & Gun Club

The Tactical Shooting Instructor School is intended for the experienced and previously-trained  and/or certified law enforcement firearm instructor looking to take his or her skills and agency’s training programs to the next level. This school is geared towards providing the law enforcement firearm instructor with the ability to create and implement sophisticated and practical agency-specific firearm training programs. Utilizing the NRA’s “Street to Range” concept of training, the law enforcement instructor will also come away with ideas and additional tools to provide their agency personnel with additional safe, realistic and tactically sound training on a realistic law enforcement firearm training budget.

Student instructors MUST possess strong firearm handling skills PRIOR to attending this school. The program concentrates on advanced shooting skills, use of the “safety circle” concept, pivoting and turning to fire, movement while firing, unconventional shooting positions, two-man patrol tactics, use of the back-up and off-duty pistol, how to introduce cost-effective decision-making training and stress inoculation into your programs, as well as reduced-light training with the pistol and rifle.

Specific eligibility requirements must be met prior to attending any NRA Law Enforcement Firearm Instructor school. Registration in any of these programs must be made on proper forms with appropriate documentation attached. Registration confirmation to attend must be received from NRA prior to arriving at any school. All applicants must be United States citizens or lawful permanent residents of the U.S. who must also be able to lawfully possess firearms and ammunition.

What to bring:

A 2 day personal protection handgun course which teaches the skills necessary to safely carry a concealed firearm in public and outside the home. The core of the training is the premier NRA-certified course for carrying a concealed firearm outside the home for personal protection, Personal Protection Outside the Home (PPOH) basic and advanced.

The course covers outdoor defensive shooting skills, safely drawing a firearm from a concealed holster, addressing multiple attackers, shooting while moving, barricade shooting, firearm retention techniques, and law enforcement contact procedures. In addition to the NRA-certified course, this training includes further testing to demonstrate proficiency in the course of fire required by many counties in California for CCW issuance. All NRA courses are taught by a team of certified instructors. This course fulfills the training requirement of many California jurisdictions including Alameda County, Orange County, Sacramento County, San Joaquin County including the cities of Stockton, Lodi, and Tracy. Completion of this course, however, does not guarantee that you will be issued a California CCW permit.

Certificates are awarded on successful completion of the basic and advanced NRA PPOH course. Students completing the California course of fire will be issued a certificate indicating fulfillment of 16 hours of training and testing. Course completion provides sufficient proof of training for the Arizona and Florida CCW license for non-residents. California does not recognize a Florida CCW license.

You should bring your carry gun to class. We strongly recommend that you attend the class with a functional handgun which you are practiced with and you know how to operate. In our experience, students who show up to class with a new gun or a gun that they have never fired may find that it doesn’t suit their needs or may not even be operational. Have at least three magazines and a magazine pouch that holds two magazines. You should have a quality, outside the waistband holster and a secure, well-fitting gun belt. We recommend that the holster not have a retention strap, if it is leather, and we do not allow students to train with Blackhawk Serpa holsters unless they are an armed professional who uses one as their duty holster. You will also need a concealment garment. If you wish to have more than one gun listed on your qualification certificate, bring the guns with you so that you use them to shoot the qualification exercise. You will need fifty rounds of ammunition for each gun for the qualification exercise.
